About this Event

About this trip

Verulamium offers everything you need to be Roman – villas, hypocausts, city walls, a theatre, fabulous mosaics and murals, conveniently situated on Watling Street, now known as the A5, just a couple of day’s march from London. We will explore why the city was such a success and why it is so well preserved – and why it changed its name!

As well as exploring Roman St Albans this visit will take in the Roman theatre, the best preserved in Britain, plus a guided tour of the museum for splendid mosaics, skeletons and much more.

About two hours gentle walking, with time for a chat over a drink and sandwich in the nearby park café afterwards.

Your guide, Cathy Mercer, is an experienced teacher, lecturer and tour manager. She has taught in London schools and for the Open University, Birkbeck College, Arts and Humanities Society, City Lit and the WEA.

This visit will be of special interest to students studying Classical Studies but there's something for everyone who enjoys exploring ancient cultures.

How to get there

Please meet Cathy at the entrance to Verulamium Museum at 10.15 for 10.30am

St Alban’s has regular Thameslink and ERM trains – about 20 minutes’ walk to the Roman remains. There is also a large car park by Verulamium Museum.
