Nicholas Nugent spent his career with the BBC World Service broadcasting to and reporting from different parts of Asia, and found time to write books on India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Myanmar. In his spare time he collected antique maps and has now brought his professional and personal interests together in a new book on the history of the oriental trade in spices. We are delighted to let you know that this beautiful book will be available to buy at the event for the discounted festival price of £25
The Spice Ports - Mapping the Origins of Global Sea Trade, published by The British Library, is heavily illustrated with antique maps and views of the ports he discusses ranging from Venice, Lisbon and Amsterdam in Europe to Goa, Malacca and Jakarta in the East. Also featured are Alexandria, Cape Town and Singapore as well as Bombay, London and New York in a fascinating story of trade and empire. Nicholas - who now lives in Williton - will talk about his book and the story of how it came to be written and project illustrations from his own rich collection.
