The Birth of Photography by Terence Sackett
Terence is a writer and designer who lives in Nether Stowey, close to the Quantock Hills. He gives talks and leads walks about Coleridge and his time in the Quantocks.
He has written three novels, all on Amazon: 'Cut and Run', 'No Crisis for Hut man', and 'Searching for Gilbert White'.
Terence gives a lavishly illustrated talk about the birth of photography with its trials and triumphs: from the first human being ever to be photographed to the popular picture postcard.
See Joseph Niépce’s groundbreaking photo with its 8-hour exposure; sitters struggling not to twitch for interminably long daguerreotype portraits; Julia Margaret Cameron aping Rembrandt in her high art studies of Charles Darwin and Lord Tennyson; pictorialism; Alfred Stieglitz, Photo Seccession and Camera Work; and the adventurer Francis Frith battling with robbers and sizzling developing chemicals in the sapping desert heat of the Nile.
Plus documentary realism and the plight of the poor; child labour; images of war; the rise of industry with Brunel and his SS Great Eastern; the old Darby and Joan couple who’d never met; and working families enjoying train rides and days out at the seaside.
A talk showing how photography has influenced art, industry and daily life.
We finish with drawing the Words in Watchet Raffle Winners followed by a farewell message from Angela Patmore reading from her latest book ‘Brilliants’.
Angela is the author of over twenty published books including several on extreme psychology. She writes for the Spectator and the Critic on mental health issues, was an External Stress Expert Advisor to the Met Police and a life skills trainer to the long-term unemployed. She runs a creative writing class for people who think they have no imagination.
