IndigiScapes will host a range of activities during Australian Pollinator Week (commencing Saturday 9 November) highlighting native birds and bees, as well as pollinator species you might be less familiar with like moths, wasps, flies and flying-foxes, all of which contribute to the sustainable future of our forests, flowers and food crops and are vital to the health of our ecosystem.
IndigiScapes Cafe and gift shop will offer a delicious selection of produce brought to you by these clever pollinators.
The Native Nursery will feature pollinator attracting native plants. Pick up a ‘Pollinator pack’ of six native plants from the nursery or gift shop for only $15.
Explore IndigiScapes using smartphone technology and augmented reality. Download the Agents of Discovery app for the latest mission from Agent Galah.
Children will enjoy a range of colouring-in activities and resources in the Discovery Centre.
Family Day - Saturday 9 November (9am to 12 midday):
Meet an adorable orphan Flying-fox with volunteers from Bat Conservation and Rescue Queensland and learn about how these power pollinators work to help put food on our table.
BirdLife South Queensland will join us to share their knowledge about the vital role of pollinator birds.
Native beehive observation and pollination education with Urban Bee Co, exhibiting what pollinators do and how they fit into our food web, showcasing the obvious European honeybees, but also exploring the other amazing pollinators we have in our community such as native stingless bees, solitary bees like Blue banded, teddy bear, leaf cutter and fire tail resin bees to name a few.
Did you know some of our native solitary bees love to nest in soils and clays!
Children will love getting messy making their own solitary bee hotel.
Mixing clay, sand and water together to make a paste to fill a bamboo tube. When dry, this hotel can help attract ground dwelling solitary bees and other insects into your garden.
There will also be seed ball making.
Make a Pollinator Sun catcher with Tamsyn from Wild Clover Kids.
Monday 11 November:
8am-10am: Guided Garden and nursery tour with Nursery Coordinator Ben Webb, where you will learn tips on how to create pollinator attracting habitat and participate in capturing insect observations using iNaturalist alongside Environmental Partnership officers.
Thursday 14 November:
7am-9am: Join Bushcare Birders on their regular bush walk at IndigiScapes, with special guest Dr Richard Noske, an academic specialist in native flora and birds and member of BirdLife South Queensland. The walk will be followed by a light morning tea and presentation about bird pollination with Dr Noske afterwards.
Experience the fascination of a Flying-fox flyout with Council wildlife officers and learn more about these intriguing and unique creatures (location and time to be announced).
