Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is thrilled to announce auditions for "The Old Man and The Old Moon," a musical tall tale about a man tasked with filling the leaking moon with liquid light. When his wife disappears in search of a mysterious melody, the Old Man must abandon his duty and navigate a world of shifting shadows and seafaring wonder to find her.

REHEARSAL DETAILS
Due to the nature of the production’s staging, we intend to begin weekly music sessions in September focused on band and instrument rehearsal with cast availability, and general staging rehearsals, held Monday–Thursday evenings, beginning in December.
A Note on Casting This Show
The Old Man and the Old Moon was created by PigPen Theatre Co. as much of a folk band of 7–9 performers as a theatre production — every performer plays a live instrument on stage in addition to acting, singing, handling stage theatrics, and playing multiple character roles. There are no small parts.
We're looking for performers who can act, sing, and play a folk/acoustic instrument (guitar, banjo, accordion, upright/acoustic bass, piano, fiddle, dulcimer, drums/percussion, etc.). You don't need to be a virtuoso, but you should be comfortable playing and performing simultaneously, from memory.
This story draws on Celtic folk tradition, and the production will incorporate light dialects inspired by that world. Precision isn't required — just a willingness to commit to an accent comfortably.
Most performers will be cast across a track — a cluster of several roles played by one actor — rather than a single character, so don't be discouraged if you don't see one obvious "big part" for you below; several of these roles are doubled by the same performer, and as such may be cast across genders.
Please note: Some specialty performers requiring specific instrumental or physical skills have been precast in advance, however, all character roles will be cast from open auditions.
AUDITION PREPARATION:
• Please complete our audition form so we can best schedule and accommodate all auditioners: https://forms.gle/AcY4PSigexVe1dAE6 — please note we may reach out prior to auditions to coordinate group appointment times based on demand.
• Auditions will open with a group dance audition, followed by vocal/instrumental auditions.
• Vocal/instrumental audition: please prepare 32 bars or 60 seconds of a song of your choice that showcases both your voice and your instrument together. Folk, Americana, or acoustic arrangements are especially welcome given the sound of this production, but strong vocal/instrumental pairing matters more than genre.
• Please wear movement-appropriate clothing for the choreography portion.
Virtual auditions may be submitted through the audition form by Saturday, August 29. All performers must be available for in-person callbacks and all performance dates.
CHARACTER ROLES
THE OLD MAN — Has spent his life keeping the moon topped off with liquid light. His wife's disappearance shakes him out of a settled, unchanging routine and sends him on a journey.
THE OLD WOMAN — Weary of the sameness of her life tending the moon alongside her husband. She sets off to chase down a memory that's been calling to her.
MATHESON — First mate aboard the ship and the show's narrator. A gifted storyteller who holds both the audience and his fellow sailors in his grip.
LLEWELLYN — The youngest sailor — earnest and a little green. The Old Man takes him under his wing as the journey goes on.
MABELU — A good-humored sailor with a big heart. Still carries the loss of a beloved dog from years back.
CALLAHAN — A tough, committed sailor who doesn't back down from a fight.
COOKIE — The ship's cook — a bit erratic, possibly skittish around open flame.
CAPTAIN — Commands the ship with courage and a real gift for speechmaking.
PERRY — Once a celebrated naval officer (First Lieutenant Pericles Llewellyn McWallander), betrayed and thrown overboard by his own mutinous crew. Now stuck living inside a giant fish.
CLERK — Runs the boat shop, worn down and joyless about it every single day.
MICKEY — The Clerk's young assistant, always in his grandfather's old hat.
SOLOMON — A sharp, clever engineer specializing in flight — Bartley's sibling.
BARTLEY — Solomon's sibling, equally sharp and equally into aeronautics.
DOG (LUCY) — Mabelu's long-lost dog, who resurfaces later in the story.
BARTENDER — Goes by "Bill" — almost certainly not his actual name.
PATRON — A bar regular who plays piano but won't take requests.
FINE LADY — A local townswoman holding onto a secret.
REBEL ONE — Leads the rebel forces, but would rather avoid the fight than start one.
REBEL TWO — A rebel soldier itching for a confrontation.
BOATSWAIN ONE — A seasoned, experienced boatswain.
BOATSWAIN TWO — Still learning the ropes as the boatswain's apprentice.
BEN — Runs a shop in town that's perpetually out of stock.
GHOST SINGER — A sailor's spirit with a flair for cabaret performance.
THE YOUNG WOMAN — The Old Woman, seen in an earlier chapter of her life.
