Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park Audition Information
Times:
Sunday, June 14th and Monday, June 15th 7pm – 9pm
Where: JRT Warehouse
Synopsis: Barefoot in the Park is one of the most beloved comedies of Neil Simon. Newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter are over the moon to begin their life together in their new apartment in Manhattan. It may be small and a six-flight climb, the heating may be busted and snow may be falling through the skylight, but nothing can quash their newlywed bliss. Paul is a straight-laced lawyer and Corie a romantic free-spirit; nevertheless, opposites attract and the two are wild about each other. Corie decides to set her conservative widowed mother up with their eccentric, bohemian neighbor. A wild night ensues, one that highlights just how different Corie and Paul are. The young couple must learn how to accept and embrace their differences as they learn that marriage is no easy walk in the park.
Please come prepared to do cold readings from the script.
Rehearsals begin July 20th and will typically be from 7:00 – 9:30pm Mon-Thurs and will include some weekends as we get closer to the opening weekend. Please bring your calendar with all conflicts to auditions as the schedule is made to fit your availability.
Roles:
1. Corie Bratter: A vivacious and free-spirited young woman, Corie is newly married to Paul. She is enthusiastic about life and eager to make their small apartment a home, often clashing with Paul's more conservative nature. Her impulsiveness and romantic ideals drive much of the play's action.
2. Paul Bratter: Corie's husband, Paul is a straight-laced lawyer who embodies practicality and caution. His reserved demeanor contrasts sharply with Corie's adventurous spirit, leading to comedic tension as they navigate their new life together.
3. Mrs. Ethel Banks: Corie's mother, a widow who provides a traditional perspective on love and marriage. Her character adds a layer of humor and wisdom, often serving as a foil to the younger couple's more modern views.
4. Victor Velasco: The eccentric neighbor living in the attic apartment, Victor is flamboyant and adventurous. His unorthodox lifestyle and antics provide comic relief and challenge Paul’s conservative outlook, making him a catalyst for change in the Bratters' lives.
5. Telephone Repairman: Supporting role. There to provide comedic commentary about the newlyweds unfortunate circumstances
6. Delivery Man: Minor Role. Barely speaks, but lots of fun to be had coming in and stealing the scene with all the huffing and puffing.
