The Primary Ashtanga Vinyasa Series was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois, and it is meticulously designed to move the body through all planes of movement in a fixed order. Arising out of the eight limbs (ashtanga) of yogic philosophy, this sequence is designed to strengthen, stretch, and purify the body and quiet the mind.In this traditional rigorous flow, we will repeat the same sequence each class, which allows practitioners to progress at their own pace and key into the subtle changes in our bodies each time we return to the practice. Sanskrit names and numbers are used in this class, though English names will also be stated. It is encouraged to attend the weekly Ashtanga - Primary Short Form classes to get familiar with the sequence before attempting the Full Primary Series.
Modifications and props are offered and welcome in this class. The pace of an Ashtanga Vinyasa class is steady and demanding, but students are always encouraged to listen to their bodies and take rest when needed.
