Artist Walk & Talk with Leah Knecht
About this Event
Join artist Leah Knecht for a free guided Walk & Talk through her solo exhibition, Step 2: The Progression, at ace/121 Gallery. As she leads visitors through the exhibition, Knecht will share the stories, ideas, and creative process behind her layered mixed-media sculptures and assemblages, offering personal insight into the themes that shape her work and inviting conversation along the way.
Drawing from her experience as a Japanese American artist of biracial heritage, Knecht explores identity, belonging, exclusion, and resilience through works created primarily from reclaimed vintage windows and doors. The exhibition reflects on racism, immigration, and the lasting impact of historical events while encouraging visitors to consider how the past continues to shape the present.
Referencing the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II alongside today’s conversations surrounding immigration and belonging, Step 2: The Progression examines the consequences of anti-immigrant rhetoric and fear-based propaganda through richly layered works that reveal new perspectives as viewers move through the gallery.
Whether you’re interested in contemporary art, history, social issues, or hearing directly from an artist about the inspiration behind her work, this intimate gallery experience offers a meaningful opportunity for dialogue, reflection, and connection.
