• Catharina Evens
Catharina Evens is een Belgische experimentele elektro-akoestische pianist die op zoek gaat naar
een alternatief klankenpalet voor de akoestische piano. Dit doet ze onder meer door akoestische klanken live te manipuleren via elektronica en deze te versterken en te laten resoneren doorheen de volledige piano (zangbodem, klankkast, snaren). De typische pianoklank, die we doorgaans associëren met de akoestische piano, vervaagt en maakt zo plaats voor een eigenzinnig klankuniversum waarvan ze de verschillende muzikale mogelijkheden via improvisatie en compositie verder verkent. Aan de hand van granulaire texturen, speelse wispelturigheid, voorbijvliegende klankvlagen, minuscule stippels, meeslepende pianistieke passages, percussieve accenten en ritmische sequenties creëert Catharina zo haar eigen absurde klankenwereld vol verhalende fragmenten.

Catharina Evens is a Belgian experimental pianist. Moving between improvisation and composition, she experiments with various techniques that challenge and play with the general perception of the acoustic piano. By using the instrument's body and its rich resonant structure to amplify electronically manipulated acoustic sounds, she strives to create what she envisions as one unified sonic body. Through granular textures, playful fickleness, passing gust of sounds, minuscule dots, moving pianistic passages, percussive accents and rhythmic sequences, she creates her own absurd sound world full of narrative fragments.

Abdullah Miniawy is een van de invloedrijkste stemmen uit de broeierige Egyptische muziekscene (denk ook aan Nadah El Shazly of Maurice Louca). De zanger, dichter, trompettist en acteur combineert klassieke Arabische zang en soefisme met jazz, opera en experimenteel geluid. Zijn virtuoze stem, dramatische performance-stijl en verbindende boodschap brachten hem van het MOMA tot het Europese Parlement. Na talloze samenwerkingen, zoals met Deena Abdelwahed, Wael Shawky en Le Cri du Caire - waarmee hij de Franse grammy’s won - keert Abdullah Miniawy terug naar de eenvoud: een stem en twee trombones. Zijn nieuwe album Peacock dreams أَحْلَامُ الطَّاوُوسِ’ is een episch gedicht dat de Westerse operatraditie verenigt met liederen uit de Arabische Lente en andere Egyptische en Golf-invloeden. Live gaat Miniawy recht naar het hart: emotioneel, dramatisch, met grote gebaren en contrasten. In een gespleten politieke wereld zorgt Miniawy voor een moment van verbondenheid en ontroering.

Abdullah Miniawy is one of the most influential voices in the vibrant Egyptian music scene (think Nadah El Shazly or Maurice Louca). The singer, poet, trumpeter, and actor combines classical Arabic singing and Sufism with jazz, opera, and experimental sounds. His virtuoso voice, dramatic performance style, and uniting message have brought him from MOMA to the European Parliament. After countless collaborations, including with Deena Abdelwahed, Wael Shawky, and Le Cri du Caire - with whom he won the French Grammys - Abdullah Miniawy returns to simplicity: a voice and two trombones. His new album Peacock dreams أَحْلَامُ الطَّاوُوسِ is an epic poem that unites the Western opera tradition with songs from the Arab Spring and other Egyptian and Gulf influences.
