1984 brengt drie rusteloze experimentalisten samen, allen geboren in dat beklijvend symbolische jaar: saxofonist Sakina Abdou, turntablist Mariam Rezaei en gitarist Kobe Van Cauwenberghe. Na een residentie in STUK (maart 2025), een concert op het Summer Bummer Festival (augustus 2025), en een driedaagse opnamesessie in de Dropa House studio (sep 2025), presenteert het trio nu zijn debuut-lp, The Forward Process, via het Dropa Disc-label.
Geïnspireerd door een passage uit Ursula K. Le Guins The Dispossessed en door Zooid, het unieke harmonische intervalsysteem van Henry Threadgill, vertaalt 1984 dystopische echo’s naar levendige, utopische noise. Het trio componeert en speelt muziek die complex, collectief en dromerig is, waarin elk onderdeel onafhankelijk beweegt maar toch met elkaar verbonden blijft.

1984 brings together three restless experimentalists, all born in that hauntingly symbolic year: saxophonist Sakina Abdou, turntablist Mariam Rezaei, and guitarist/composer Kobe Van Cauwenberghe. Following a residency at STUK (March 2025), a concert at the Summer Bummer Festival (August 2025), and a three-day recording session at the Dropa House studio (September 2025), the trio now presents its debut LP, ‘The Forward Process’, via the Dropa Disc label.
Inspired by a passage from Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Dispossessed’ and by Zooid, the unique harmonic intervallic system of Henry Threadgill, 1984 translates dystopian echoes into vibrant, utopian noise. The trio composes and plays complex, collective, and dreamy music in which every element moves independently yet remains interconnected.

أحمد [ahmed] brengt diep-ritmische muziek gebaseerd op herhalende patronen en swingende syncopes. Een krachtige stomp in de maag die naderhand overgaat in een heerlijk gevoel van extase. De basis voor het kwartet is de muziek van Ahmed Abdul-Malik, een intussen overleden New Yorkse bassist en componist die Arabische en Oost-Afrikaanse invloeden binnenbracht in de jazzmuziek. Zijn gedachten en melodieën schemeren door in de muziek van أحمد [ahmed], dat gevormd wordt door enkele van de beste Europese improvisatie-muzikanten: Pat Thomas, Antonin Gerbal, Joel Grip en Seymour Wright. Hun albums, die verschenen vanaf 2017 tot nu, zijn ongeëvenaarde trips die uitblinken in techniek en uithoudingsvermogen. Maar أحمد [ahmed] is een band die je vooral live moet zien, en dat kan nu voor het eerst in België tijdens Artefact Sound.

أحمد [ahmed] brings heavy rhythmic music based on repetitive patterns and swinging syncopations. A powerful punch in the stomach that subsequently transitions into a deep feeling of ecstasy. The foundation for the quartet is the music of Ahmed Abdul-Malik, a now deceased New York bassist and composer who introduced Arabic and East African influences into jazz music. His thoughts and melodies shine through in the music of أحمد [ahmed], which is formed by some of the best European improvisational musicians: Pat Thomas, Antonin Gerbal, Joel Grip, and Seymour Wright. Their albums, released from 2017 to the present, are unparalleled journeys that excel in technique and endurance. But أحمد [ahmed] is a band that you really have to see live, and now you can do so for the first time in Belgium during Artefact Sound.

• Echoes of Dissent (Vol. 8): Conversation with أحمد [Ahmed]
Voorafgaand aan het concert van أحمد [Ahmed] en ter gelegenheid van de publicatie van een boek met teksten van en over أحمد [Ahmed], organiseert STUK een uitgebreid gesprek met de bandleden. We zullen het hebben over improvisatie als onderzoek en het maken van muziek als medium voor het denken; de muziek en ideeën van Ahmed Abdul-Malik en de Arabische en islamitische wortels van jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek; het belang van het onderzoeken van en in ‘jazz’ en de mogelijkheden van nieuwe jazznotatie; أحمد [Ahmed] als een meegaande en radicale visie op synthese en open structuur(en) en een gedeelde ruimte van (her)verbeelding en (her)interpretatie.
In het kader van het onderzoeksproject Echoes of Dissent (KASK & Conservatorium / School of Arts Gent), in samenwerking met In vitro.
