"Meet the Artist" with Marianna Rothen

On Thursday, June 5, we welcome Marianna Rothen to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Rothen will screen her short film, Mail Order (2019), present her series of self portraits with male mannequins, and preview her archival photographic series Like a Dream (1997-2005). Mail Order is a meditation on femininity and womanhood in the context of the relationship with men. ‘Lady’ is followed through a series of vignettes that the artist performs with her male mannequins. Everything from falling in love to getting married and having a baby are all scenes in this fabricated tongue-in-cheek world of objects and objectifiers. Rothen will have copies of her books Shadows in Paradise and Making It Real available for sale during the event.

Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.

Marianna Rothen, b. 1982 is a Canadian artist living in New York. She uses her photographs, films and installations to explore and deconstruct conventional conceptions of female beauty and gender politics. Screenings and solo exhibitions of her work have been organized at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York, Polka Galerie in Paris, Biennale Images Vevey, Galerie Stephan Witschi in Zurich, The Little Black Gallery, London, Ingrid Deuss gallery in Antwerp and Kaune Contemporary in Cologne. Her work has been the subject of four monographs; Snow and Rose & other tales, Shadows in Paradise, Mail Order and Making It Real all published by b.frank books. Rothen’s films include Like a Dream (2024), Mail Order (2019), The Woman with a Crown (2014) and Desert of June (2014).
