To the Bone is a photography project documenting daily life and work on a small family farm in the Hudson Valley. Emily, a single mother of nine, manages her small farm with the help of her young daughters (her older children have found jobs off the farm and some out of state). Sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and children roam everywhere among the detritus of farm life. Its seemingly idyllic setting contrasts sharply with the gritty hard work of maintaining the farm and with Emily’s personal choice to live off the grid. She has given birth to her children at home, and the young children are homeschooled. Television, personal computers, smartphones, and social media are not part of their lives at home. There are no mirrors in the house; everyone is encouraged instead to reflect on their relationship with nature, the land, work and most importantly, family and God —Maureen Beitler
