About this Event
On Thursday, April 9, we welcome Charlie Engman to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. In this presentation, Engman will trace several threads of his practice, moving between a long-term collaborative project with his mother, a hybrid text-and-image cultural critique of Hello Kitty, and recent experiments with generative AI. Bringing these works into conversation, he will reflect on how images produce meaning, intimacy, and belief, and consider the risks and creative possibilities of working with AI as an unstable and contested medium. Engman will have copies of his books for sale throughout the evening. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm.
Join us on select Thursday evenings at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served.
“Meet the Artist” is made possible by generous grants from the Arnold & Augusta Newman Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Charlie Engman is a Brooklyn-based artist, photographer, educator, and the art director for the fashion brand Collina Strada. His work explores imagery’s social and emotional dimensions, focusing on the body as a site of mediation between self and otherness. Recently incorporating generative AI, Engman investigates how technology reshapes representation, identity, and cultural production while probing the intersections of labor, capital, and creativity. He is the author of MOM (2020), Hello Chaos: A Love Story – The Disorder of Seeing and Being Seen (2024), and Cursed (2024).
