Dubuque native and author Dave Markward will discuss his book, “From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond: My Journey to Understand Racism in America,” his transformative journey that inspired the book, and take audience questions. This event is free and open to the public. Copies of “From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond” will be available for purchase.
“From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond: My Journey to Understand Racism in America” is a memoir that shares author Dave Markward’s journey of personal transformation; going from an exclusively white upbringing in Dubuque, to a life enriched by diversity. His book delves into the complex world of racism and shares his unwavering belief in humanity and the power of education to effect change.
Dave Markward has dedicated his professional life to public education, starting his career as a junior high school science teacher, then as a coach, principal, school district superintendent, college instructor, and educational consultant. Markward is a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and Augustana College (Illinois), he also holds two advanced degrees from Western Illinois University and a doctorate from Illinois State University.
