A staged reading of a new adaptation of "Bell, Book, and Candle" set in 1950s Durham’s historic Hayti neighborhood.
About this Event

Join us for an in-person staged reading of a bold new adaptation of the classic Bell, Book, and Candle with an all-Black cast. Set in the 1950s Hayti neighborhood of Durham, North Carolina, this reimagining follows a family of Rootworkers living under an ancestral curse that forbids them from falling in love.

Performed by a cast of local actors, this staged reading offers audiences a first look at the developing play. Actors will perform script-in-hand, bringing the story to life through character, voice, and imagination while allowing the audience to experience the work in its early stage of development.

Blending humor, romance, spirituality, and Southern Black culture, this adaptation explores themes of love, faith, tradition, and the tension between spiritual power and human desire.

Following the performance, the audience will be invited to stay for a brief conversation with the playwright and cast to reflect on the work and share their thoughts.

Perfect for theatre lovers, creatives, and anyone looking for a unique and engaging night out in Durham. Don’t miss this one-night-only staged reading of a new work in development.
