Step into history and celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary The Master Gardeners are proud to partner with the Lucas Farms Neighborhood to celebrate Lucas Farms History Days at Plum Grove. Lucas Farms will host numerous three-day activities throughout the neighborhood from July 17-19.
This beloved Iowa City landmark continues to bring history, gardening, and community together. We hope you will join Master Gardeners on Sunday, July 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. for a special afternoon highlighting the rich history and beauty of the Plum Grove Gardens. Located at the 1840 home of Robert Lucas, 1030 Carroll St, Iowa City, the site offers a unique connection to Iowa’s early history.
The gardens themselves were established by Master Gardeners in honor of Iowa’s sesquicentennial. In 1996, Master Gardeners Betty Kelly and Joanne Leach led the research and development of “Friendly Lucas’ Kitchen Garden.” Their vision expanded to include Grandma’s Heirloom Flower Garden (1998) and the Wildflower Garden (2000)—creating the vibrant landscape visitors enjoy today.
Over the years, Plum Grove Gardens has received numerous local, state, and national honors, including recognition from Iowa State University Extension and the Smithsonian.
This event is part of nationwide celebrations marking America’s Semiquincentennial. This year’s celebration will feature:
• Garden tours led by Master Gardeners
• Family-friendly activities
• Ice cream and desserts served on-site
Please note: In 2026, Taste of Plum Grove will pause to make way for this special America 250 Anniversary Celebration.
