About this Event
The families of Sheffield Wednesday legends Tommy Crawshaw and Fred Spiksley invite you to the unveiling of a new, fan-funded headstone for Hillsborough’s first club captain, Ambrose Langley.
For decades, Ambrose Langley has lain in an unmarked grave, his original headstone likely removed after collapsing. On Sunday 14 June 2026, this will finally change. A newly commissioned memorial will ensure that Ambrose becomes a lasting focal point within Burngreave Cemetery, commemorating a remarkable period in the club’s history.
Free Souvenir
To mark the occasion, a superb 52-page commemorative booklet has been produced. The booklet includes rare photographs and previously unseen content celebrating Ambrose Langley’s life and career.
It will be available free to the first 200 people who reserve an Eventbrite ticket for the event. (Please note the current number of tickets allocated is 200 including any remaining tickets)
About Ambrose Langley
Ambrose Langley became Sheffield Wednesday’s captain following the club’s move to Hillsborough—then known as Owlerton—in 1899.
This was a pivotal moment in the club’s history. Wednesday had just suffered their first relegation from the top flight of English football, while also leaving their Olive Grove home and relocating away from the city centre to what was then a non-footballing district of Sheffield.
Langley proved to be an exceptional leader. In his first season as captain he guided the team back to the top division, and just a few years later led Wednesday to their first Football League championship in 1902–03.
A true stalwart of the club, Langley won the FA Cup once and the Football League twice during his playing career with Sheffield Wednesday.
After retiring as a player, he went on to become a respected and pragmatic football manager. He managed Hull Cityand Huddersfield Town, achieving remarkable success with the latter—saving the club from a proposed move to Leeds, securing promotion to the First Division, and leading them to an FA Cup Final, all within a single season.
The Memorial
While retaining traditional family wording, the design of Ambrose’s new headstone pays tribute to his hometown of Horncastle, the clubs he represented, and his outstanding football achievements.
We would be delighted if you could join us on Sunday 14 June for this special one-hour event and witness the final unveiling of this fan-funded tribute.
