About this Event

Join us for our original guided 90-minute walk around iconic locations in Sheffield City Centre, as we explore the remarkable history of Sheffield's growth as the CRUCIBLE for the moderrn game of football. From 1857 to 1875 over 200 football teams emerged in Sheffield playing to the 'Sheffield Rules' of football.

Sheffield boasts many World footballing UNIQUES for the modern game including FIRST football club; FIRST published Rules of Football; FIRST knockout tournament; FIRST team from an Industrial Works; FIRST Intercity Football Game; FIRST Football Game played under electric floodlights; ORGINATORS of the fixed Crossbar, the Corner Flag, the Pitch dimensions; ARCHITECTS (and SAVIOURS) of the moderns game like Nathaniel Creswick; John C Shaw, William Chesterman; Harry W Chambers; and John C Clegg ; PIONEERING players like Jack Hunter and Billy Mosforth; and the genesis of WOMEN'S FOOTBALL in Sheffield.

The walk is around 90-minutes and throughout you will have the opportunity to ask questions and get as much out of the walk as time allows. The walk is mainly flat through the Cathedral, Fargate and Tudor Square area, with a moderate incline at the beginning up to the Cathedral area. Toilet stops with accessible toilets are en-route if needed and at the end of the walk there will be refreshments available in local establishments.

For 2026 we will be adding optional "EXTRA TIME" to our walks.

This means that attendees can optional take some EXTRA TIME for no extra cost. THis allows the Guides to visit extra places and hear about extra personalities that we could not fit in to 90 minutes.

There will be no extra cost for this, just "EXTRA TIME" (and it should not go to penalties!).
