About this Event
ALMA and The Stone Club invite you to a curated day of celebration, music and conversation as we explore The Newquay Monoliths - a new public sculpture commission for Newquay, created by artist Robin Sullivan. With artist talks, family art workshops and live music from the inimitable Angeline Morrison, it promises to be a beautiful finale to the Winter Arts Weekend.
About Robin Sullivan:
Robin Sullivan (b. 1992, London) creates works spanning artforms, from public programmes covering entire landscapes; to large scale ceramic firings; intimate sculptures, to expansive bodies of research. Their varied works bear strong historical references inspired by their decade-long inquiry into prehistoric England. By considering a place’s deep time geology, archaeology, natural environment and present day communities, Sullivan’s work explores the formation of the British landscape, not just physically but conceptually. Working with entire communities, artists, archaeologists, botanists, geologists and engineers, their work is fundamentally executed in dialogue with others. They understand that art situated in the landscape must be focused on what is communal, rather than what is individual.
About Stone Club:
Founded by artists Lally MacBeth & Matthew Shaw, Stone Club was set up as a place for stone enthusiasts to congregate, to muse and most importantly to stomp to stones. Stone Club believes the journey is as important as the destination and encourages people to pause and think about place in new ways; connecting ancient sites through community and conversation. Stone Club aims to bring new perspectives to prehistory in a collaborative and inclusive way.
About Angeline Morrison:
Angeline Morrison is a folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose 2022 album ‘The Sorrow Songs : Folk Songs of Black British Experience’ (Topic Records) was voted No 1 Folk Album of the year in The Guardian. Angeline explores traditional song with a deep reverence, love and curiosity, a handmade sonic aesthetic and a feeling for the stories of ordinary human lives.
"A ballad maker for our time" (ArtsDesk.com)
"Morrison's courage in reconstructing folk repertoire is truly revolutionary" (New Internationalist)
"Abundant with meaning and feeling" (The Guardian)
