Active Rest Sunday: Tai Chi & Calligraphy with Junlin
About this Event
Active rest that lets a full week settle, and gives your nervous system the calm it deserves.
We gather at 11 on Sunday, in the noon hour. Chinese medicine links this time with the heart, when yang reaches its peak and begins turning to yin, a natural window for restoration. In 90 minutes you learn something new, move mindfully, and leave with a nervous system that feels settled, steady and clear.
Why active calm
Many of us know how to keep going, and fewer of us know how to truly settle. Active calm is a state where the body is relaxed and the mind is awake and focused. Rather than simply lying still, you give your attention to one gentle task at a time: the slow pressure of a brush stroke, the quiet shift of weight from one leg to the other. This focused, unhurried movement helps your nervous system shift out of high alert and into a steadier rhythm, so the calm you feel today becomes something your body learns and can return to during the week.
Two arts, one philosophy
In ancient China, Tai Chi and calligraphy were both practiced as arts of cultivation, ways to train the mind through the body. Each expresses yin and yang: stillness and movement, softness and strength, and xu shi 虚实, the interplay of empty and full. In Tai Chi, it lives in the way weight shifts from a full leg to an empty one. In calligraphy, every single stroke holds yin and yang: pressing and lifting, heavy and light, slow and quick.
How the session flows
We open and close with the brush, with Tai Chi in the middle. You begin by settling in, meeting the Four Treasures of the Study, and writing a word with a positive meaning in seal script, one of the oldest forms of Chinese writing. Then we stand and move through gentle Tai Chi foundations, including Zhan Zhuang standing meditation, letting deep relaxation reach the whole body. Finally we return to the brush with a calmer body and hand, and you move your word onto a bookmark to take home.
What you take home
A body that feels relaxed and grounded
A clearer, quieter mind for the week ahead
A simple Tai Chi practice you can use any day to find calm
Your own handwritten bookmark as a reminder
Capped at 5 people, this is an intimate, quiet practice. No calligraphy or Tai Chi experience needed. Tea and all materials included.
Led by Junlin, a Tai Chi gold medalist and founder of The Way Home Collective, who studies Chen style Tai Chi with Master Tony Wong.
