Join us at the Bath Spa Theatre Workshops for the Accessibility and Lighting Design PhD Research Workshop
About this Event

This is a workshop that has been developed as part of a Practice Based Research PhD. The aim of this research is to understand how to improve barriers to accessibility within the performing arts. The central aim of the project is enable wider creative use of technologies.

Throughout the last year we have developed a lighting design tool that hopes to lower threshold to entry for designing in both physical and virtual spaces. After successful trials of the design tool across a variety of theatre productions, our Workshop is aiming to receive feedback from a wide variety of practitioners to asses the viability of it before further development.

Having looked at the success of tools that have been designed specifically with artists as the core user demographic, for example, Photoshop, this research aims to adapt the design interface to be more accessible to a wider demographic outside of technicians. Predominantly, this has looked at combing artists input and taking inspiration from visual aids to remove language from the interface and replace it with symbols or images, allowing users to generate a unique lighting design from a single image.

The workshop will consist of a variety of research sharing and data gathering, including:

  • Introduction to the Research
  • Group Discussion
  • Trial of Design Tool
  • Questionnaire and Feedback

In appreciation of the time dedicated to supporting the research, and the understanding that it is time away from potential paid work, you will be paid £100 for participation in the workshop.

There is limited capacity to attend the workshop. There are 6 places available on Tuesday 16th and 6 places available on Wednesday 17th

Additionally before attending you must read and complete and information sheet and consent form.
