Somerset is one of the most geologically diverse counties in England, producing a rich variety of building stones that give our towns and villages their distinctive character. On this walk we will explore the Abbey ruins looking at the different types of stone and how they were used. Then we will move out into the town to see what other stones have been used in more recent centuries.
This walk is led by Val Graham, a lifelong Glastonbury resident with interests in geology, botany and local history. He is a member of Somerset Geology Group which has been recording building stones across Somerset for the last 10 years on behalf of the Somerset Heritage Centre.
The walk lasts for 2 hours starting in Glastonbury Abbey, before moving outside to the streets and pavements of the town, this will involve road crossings, slopes and we shall be standing or walking throughout. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear and check the weather conditions on the day, prior to attending the tour.
Please meet in the abbey museum in plenty of time for the start of the walk at 10.30am.
Tickets cost £15 (£5 for Glastonbury Abbey Members) and include admission to the abbey. Prior booking is essential.
