Join local historian Andy McEwan on a trail of discovery into the history of the city, through the tales told on some of the city's oldest headstones.
Starting in the shadow of one of Stirling's oldest buildings, Cowane's Hospital, and we will take a walk into the graveyard surrounding the historic Church of the Holy Rude. The beauty of the old town perched atop the rock that dominates the landscape, you will be presented with an array of photo opportunites - ancient buildings, wide open landscapes, and the fascinating details created by medieval stone carvers.
Andy will beguile us with tales of old Stirling whilst exploring the historic gravesyard. Learn about those buried there and what they did in life, whilst learning a little of the meaning of the symbols on the older gravestones.
About Andy
Andy is a native of Stirling with a deep love of the history of the city. He is Deacon of the Incorporation of Hammermen, one of the Seven Incorporated Trades. He was central to the revival of the ancient Walking of the Marches, now a major annual civic event, of which he is now Chair.
Meeting Point and Access
Meet outside Cowane’s hospital/Church of the holy Rude.
Meeting point is a 15 minute uphill walk from Stirling train station. There is on street parking on St John Street, payable at the meter.
The surfaces within the cemetery are uneven and it can be slippy when wet. Please dress for the weather
