Oak Tree Books and Circle Cinema , in partnership with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship and the McFarlin Tower Guild invite you to join us for a special evening celebrating the life and works of Oklahoma’s own "Dimestore Dostoevsky", Jim Thompson on what would have been his 120th birthday - Sunday, September 27.
The event will include a screening of The Killing (1956) directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written by Jim Thompson with a panel discussion featuring Award-winning authors: Film Noir scholar Megan Abbott, writer on FX’s The Lowdown, Lou Berney, and Thompson biographer Robert Polito.
Come early for a pop-up in the lobby with our special guests- copies of Jim Thompson: Five Noir Novels of the 1950s & 60s edited by Robert Polito and published by The Library of America will be on sale alongside copies of Polito’s, Savage Art: A Biography of Jim Thompson as well as books by Megan Abbott and Lou Berney. FREE collectible Kubrick postcards from the The Criterion Collection in promotion of the upcoming Kubrick box set will be available in the lobby while they last! Megan Abbott is the award-winning author of twelve crime novels, including The Fever, Beware the Woman and the New York Times bestseller The Turnout. Lou Berney is the Edgar Award-winning author of seven novels, including, most recently, Crooks, Dark Ride, and November Road. He writes for the FX television series, The Lowdown.
Robert Polito’s most recent books are After the Flood: Inside Bob Dylan's Memory Palace (2026) and Jim Thompson: Five Noir Novels of the 1950s & 60s (2026). He is the founding Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at the New School, where he teaches writing and literature, he served as President of the Poetry Foundation (2113-15).
