8 Dimensions of Wellness Group

The paths to wellness and recovery from substance use are inherently related. A lack of balance in one or several areas often leads individuals to use drugs or alcohol to feel better. However, regular substance use can quickly lead to substance use disorder, further reducing an individual’s wellness in multiple dimensions. Just like a balanced diet is needed for healthy nutrition, balanced wellness engages the body, mind, and nurtures the spirit. This multi-dimensional wellness approach focuses on emphasizing the importance of positivity and internal motivation for promoting healthy habits to improve one's quality of life. Wellness is comprised of eight mutually co-dependence dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial. If any one of these dimensions is neglected over time, it will adversely affect one's health, well-being and quality of life. A well-rounded balance of these wellness dimensions provides holistic harmony to one's personal well-being. With this in mind, Serenity House utilizes this model in our recovery planning and goal setting with our participants. Each week will cover one dimension in a peer led setting where participants will have the opportunity to see how the dimensions fit into their lives as well as their peer recovery coach.
