4000 Miles From Home - A Tale To Punjab To Yorkshire
About this Event
This exhibition was marked by a series of academic works and discussions on the stories and photos of Akbal Singh Kang. An arrival into the country aged 11 in 1961, he followed his Father, Sarwan Singh who arrived in the 1950’s, and documented the life of his family and his community throughout his life. His work from the 1960’s, and 1950’s archive is shown here. The pictures detail a vibrant, driven and thriving community that managed to develop its journey of 4000 miles into a journey of personal growth and success, within the region and in the fields of Education and Professionally. Their experience was also heavily shaped by the region and its Industry, which is also shown here with glimpses of Mill and working life for this wave of immigration into Bradford. The journey was to leave an indelible mark, make history and build foundations for a new home.
