Following the Sense Gates Sound Practice workshop, co-leader Samuel Platter presents Hidden Vistas, an extended sound collage of subsurface field recordings that reveal the otherwise inaccessible resonances and rhythms residing within our urban environments and infrastructure.
All of the source material was recorded with geophones — microphones that are designed to record very faint, low-frequency underground and seismic sounds. The resulting recordings have been composed, in both manipulated and unmanipulated form, into a sixty-minute sequence exposing the inner vibrational lives of the components of our built environment at all scales, from massive suspension bridges to washing machines .
The evening also includes several brief whimsical sound compositions created from time-compressed versions of the same source material, playing with and against the pulse and breath of the metropolitan recording locations. Discussion will follow.
With 15 years of experience in post-production audio and music, Sam Plattner specializes in recording and crafting bespoke sounds to build immersive, evocative audio worlds. His work blends traditional and novel recording techniques driven by a deep-seated passion for sonic experimentation and influenced by longstanding interests in biology (with emphasis on entomology), physics and mathematics. Sam’s work is infused with the belief that magic is everywhere, and thus close examination of everyday surroundings will inevitably lead to profound insights and revelations.
