3-Day Camping: Little West Fork Duchesne (TEAM A- self-drive)

Meet the Hogle Zoo team at the Sinclair gas station in Heber City at 8:45AM and proceed together to the survey site. This is a 3-day, 2-night camping trip.

(There are two groups planned for this trip: Team A & Team B. Team A (this sign-up) will conduct a day-survey on Tuesday and Team B will leave later in the day and conduct a night survey at the same site. If you would prefer to leave later in the day and do a night survey, return to the collection and find the Team B (self-drive) sign-up page). Transportation: Your own private/personal vehicle. AWD or 4WD vehicle required (i.e Subaru Outback). Drive from SLC is about 1.5-2 hrs.

Difficulty: Up to 8/10, variable hiking conditions. This trip is best suited for intermediate to experienced hikers. The hike from camp into the main survey site is short but steep (~1 mi with ~700ft elevation change one way) and off trail. We will do this hike to and from the survey site at least once per day (can optionally choose to do it twice). Once at the site, we will spend survey time on our feet, walking on uneven terrain for most of the day. Lunch and rest breaks in scenic places of course!

What to pack/wear:

• Please bring a packed lunch for the first day (i.e. sandwich/Tupperware meal that will easily fit in your backpack and can eat mid-day when we take a break during survey)

• Comfortable hiking and camp clothes you don't mind getting wet/dirty. Rain jacket (rain pants if you have them), extra socks (keep 1-2 pairs in your daypack everyday), warm layers for night that you can shed during the day, and sun protection (hat, glasses). Light weight hiking pants/work pants recommended instead of shorts. We will be walking, crouching, & squatting in dense vegetation (willows). Some prefer to wear light weight long sleeves to protect them from getting scratched by vegetation. Plan for cold nights and warm days.

• Close-toed hiking shoes/boots you don't mind getting wet/dirty.

• Water/rain boots or waders are recommended but not required (your feet are likely to get wet).

• A backpack big enough to hold 1-2 (32oz) water bottles, lunch, snacks, extra clothing layers.

• Tent (with rain fly and stakes), warm sleeping bag, sleeping pad, headlamp (fresh batteries)

• Any other camp comforts you prefer (games, books, pillow, ear plugs, eye mask, etc.)

The Zoo will provide:

• All cooked meals and snacks (mostly vegetarian) and associated cookware

• Bathroom supplies (no facilities so we will have: shovel, toilet paper, waste bags)

• Reach out if you are missing some camp supplies; we may have extra.
