3-Day Camping: Little West Fork Duchesne (TEAM B - self-drive)

Meet the Hogle Zoo team at the Sinclair gas station in Heber City at 3:45PM and proceed together to the survey site. This is a 3-day, 2-night camping trip.

(There are two groups planned for this trip: Team A & Team B. Team B (this sign-up) will conduct a night-survey on Tuesday and Team A will leave earlier in the day and conduct a day survey at the same site. Transportation: Your own private/personal vehicle. AWD or 4WD vehicle required (i.e Subaru Outback). About 1.5-2 hr drive from SLC.

Difficulty: Up to 8/10, variable hiking conditions. This trip is best suited for intermediate to experienced hikers. The hike from camp into the main survey site is short but steep (~1 mi with ~700ft elevation change one way) and off trail. We will do this hike to and from the survey site at least once per day (can optionally choose to do it twice). Once at the site, we will spend survey time on our feet, walking on uneven terrain for most of the day. Lunch and rest breaks in scenic places of course!

What to pack/wear:

• Comfortable hiking and camp clothes you don't mind getting wet/dirty. Rain jacket (rain pants if you have them), extra socks (keep 1-2 pairs in your daypack everyday), warm layers for night that you can shed during the way, and sun protection (hat, glasses). Light weight hiking pants/work pants recommended instead of shorts. We will be walking, crouching, & squatting in dense vegetation (willows). Some prefer to wear light weight long sleeves to protect them from getting scratched. Plan for cold nights and warm days.
• Close-toed hiking shoes/boots you don't mind getting wet/dirty.
• Water/rain boots or waders are recommended but not required (your feet are likely to get wet).
• A backpack big enough to hold 1-2 (32oz) water bottles, lunch, snacks, extra clothing layers.
• Tent (with rain fly and stakes), warm sleeping bag, sleeping pad, headlamp (fresh batteries)
• Any other camp comforts you prefer (games, books, pillow, ear plugs, eye mask, etc.)

The Zoo will provide:

• All cooked meals and snacks (mostly vegetarian) and associated cookware

• Bathroom supplies (no facilities so we will have: shovel, toilet paper, waste bags)

• Reach out if you are missing some camp supplies; we may have extra.

Info: You will be promptly notified for any schedule changes

Info: 1175 S Main St, Heber City, UT 84032. Look for Zoo staff and vehicle (brown Nissan Murano) filling up on gas here. We will meet and caravan to the campsite from here.

Info: Drive from Sinclair is around 1 hour. We will set up camp and eat dinner upon arrival.

Info: Finish hike, get ready for bed after big day!

Info: Breakfast will be set up by Zoo from 7am- 7:45. Please plan accordingly to wake up with enough time to eat and get ready for the day.

Info: Rest for a few hours before we start dinner and then optional night surveys.

Info: Some biologists and volunteers who choose, will hike back into the survey sites for night surveys. These are optional.

Info: Breakfast will be set up by Zoo from 7:30am- 8:15am. Please plan accordingly to wake up with enough time to eat and get ready for the day.
