ALL AUSTIN CYCLISTS: SHOW UP ONE DAY A YEAR FOR SAFER CYCLING! Join cyclists worldwide in a silent, slow-paced ride (avg. 9-10 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed by motor vehicle drivers while cycling on public roadways.
The 24th Annual International Ride of Silence (https://rideofsilence.org) is led by Social Cycling Austin and other members of the Austin cycling community and is hosted by Austin Ghost Bike Project.
All cyclists who are willing and able to ride silently and safely are welcome. We will pass by a number of new or replacement ghost bikes installed by Austin Ghost Bike Project. This is somber yet very meaningful event you do not want to miss. If you were killed by a car, wouldn't you want a ghost bike installled for you?
WHY WE RIDE:
To HONOR those who have been injured or killed while cycling;
To DEMAND JUSTICE for those victims;
To REMIND drivers that they must SHARE THE ROAD;
To RAISE AWARENESS that people on bikes deserve safer roads.,
The bigger the turnout, the stronger message we send to drivers and to our elected government officials that we cyclists are here and have a legal right to using the road without injuries and death.
Are you part of a Wednesday night group ride or other group? Join us this one day a year to make a critical mass that cannot be ignored. Or bring all your friends who bike!
AGBP and its allies call on the City Council of Austin to:
1. PROTECT - more quickly install better and more safety protections for cyclists including protected bike lanes;
2. SHIELD - those installing and maintaining ghost bikes from any fines, penalties, or harassment by City police, staff, or contractors;
3. ADOPT - the Bicycle Advisory Commission's resolution from June 2024 to not allow any City agency, staff, or contactors to remove ghost bikes without notification to AGBP and to facilitate their replacement;
4. URGE - Austin Police Department to thoroughly investigate and charge--and Travis County District Attorney to vigorously pursue stronger penalties--for those drivers who injure or K*ll bicyclists.
