About this Event

Please join us at a special event at the Hill of Content bookshop for the announcement of the 2026 Australian Political Book of the Year Awards Shortlist.

The theme of this year’s event is the costs of political amnesia. We often talk about history as though it belongs safely in the past. But political history has a habit of catching up with us. Debates are declared unprecedented when they have happened before, and hard-won reforms are taken for granted until they are gone. Right now, we are watching that play out. Old debates are reopening, and lessons we thought we had learnt are being unlearnt. What can our political past teach us about the moment we are in now?

Join award-winning historian and winner of the 2025 Australian Political Book of the Year Award, Professor Paul Strangio and political scientist and media historian Professor Sally Young for a conversation moderated by political correspondent at the Australian Financial Review, Sumeyya Ilanbey, about the stories Australia remembers, the stories it forgets, and the political consequences of both. Following the discussion, the four books shortlisted for the 2026 Award will be announced.
