A note from our speaker, Andrew Volans:
As a practicing doctor working in the Emergency Medicine arena, and with 4 family members who had served during the First World War, I have always had an interest in the development of medicine during the conflict. Especially since my Grandfather was invalided out during the end of the Passchendaele offensive and consequently met my Grandmother who nursed him in hospital, and as a result I was eventually born!
The were family stories that have been with me since childhood and I initially sought the truth of them, before going into the medical history of the skills I have been taught and have taught others.
I look at what was expected in 1914 and what was learned in the next 4 years and what happened subsequently.
