Birds of Anishinaabe Aki: Ecology & Language
In Western science, bird names often describe obvious physical characteristics, where a species is found, or pay homage to European naturalists. In Anishinaabemowin, bird names speak to relationships, behaviours, and the roles these flying beings play within the world. Through language, they carry observations and teachings that reflect a deep understanding of the land.
Together, Joseph, Junaid and Andrés will explore how language shapes the way we see and understand birds, and what these perspectives can teach us about caring for local bird populations today and into the future.
Following the talk, participants will head outside for a guided bird walk along The Canadian Canoe Museum’s Lakefront Campus. Together, we will look for local bird species and discuss their role in local ecology. Bring your binoculars for this interactive Speaker Series event! 🐦
This event is part of The Canadian Canoe Museum’s Speaker Series.
