Last night marked a genuine milestone for me.
I attended my first Gamblers Anonymous meeting in Southport, and I want to be very clear about the outcome: it exceeded expectations. The environment was supportive, non-judgemental, and grounded in lived experience. I was welcomed, listened to, and given practical resources straight away — including guidance specifically aimed at navigating the first 90 days.
Since my cardiac arrest, I’ve struggled with gambling in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time. When you’ve quite literally died and lived to tell the tale, your relationship with risk and “luck” changes in ways that are hard to articulate. What I can say is this: acknowledging that I needed structured support — and actually stepping through the door — was a big first step, and an important one.
If you or someone you care about is quietly struggling, please know this:
• You don’t have to hit rock bottom to ask for help
• You won’t be judged
• You will be met with understanding, not lectures
This is a safe, confidential space to reset, stabilise, and move forward with accountability and real support.
For me, this was a turning point. If sharing this helps even one person take that first step, it’s worth saying out loud.
One step at a time.
