Programme name: East Meets West: A Dialogue Between Chinese and English Poetry Translators
Join two poetry translators, Joshua Ip and Fan Jinghua (De Yi Wang Er), and moderator He Shan in an unusual dialogue as they share their experiences in translating from East to West or back again. From navigating linguistic nuances to the clash of cultures, and carrying the fragile beauty of a poem across a generational gap, they will explore the challenges and art of translating poetry. The discussion will also feature their latest works, “Ownself say ownself” (including translations from Pan Shou and classic Tang/Song Dynasty poets) and “Winter Recipes from the Collective” (translated from Louise Glück), offering you the unique opportunity to experience the charm and enter the imaginary worlds of these translated collections firsthand. This bilingual event will provide fresh perspectives on cross-cultural exchange and invite participants to reflect on how literature can transcend languages and the limits of culture. The session will be conducted in both Chinese and English.
