「A Better Tomorrow」
「A Better Tomorrow」

▍Exhibition Statement
A Better Tomorrow continues Working Hard’s long-term exchanges and interactions with a group of Indonesian fisherman friends in southern Taiwan. Conceived as a phased presentation within this ongoing project, the exhibition reconstructs scenes of everyday life that once briefly existed yet were forcibly erased through spatial re-creation and multichannel sound installation.
Amid the intertwined realities of urban development and border governance, coastal shorelines become sites of estrangement and temporary dwelling for migrant workers—transitional spaces suspended between labor and rest, belonging and displacement. Through field recordings and spatial interventions, Working Hard weaves together the sounds of harbor labor, prayer, song, and ambient coastal textures into a theater without performers. In this immersive environment, lived moments re-emerge not as spectacle, but as resonance, inviting audiences to attune themselves to what has been overlooked or silenced.
A Better Tomorrow approaches the future as a question. Can communities and histories pushed to the margins still be included in how we imagine what comes next? Through light, material, and sound, the exhibition creates a space to rethink migration, labor, and coexistence—and to consider whose futures are allowed to be seen and heard.
▍About the Artists
Kuo Po-Yu and She Wen-Ying have collaborated under the name Working Hard since 2015. Their works have been presented at the 2025 Green Island Biennial and the 2023 Romantic Route 3 Art Festival. They have held artist residencies at Cité internationale des arts in Paris and Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.
More than an artistic alias, Working Hard represents a shared methodology grounded in the reconstruction of scenes, of memory, and of collective experience. Shaped by Taiwan’s distinctive geopolitical condition, their practice is driven by an enduring curiosity about migration and an attentiveness to human landscapes that gradually fade under modernization. Integrating field research with sound and spatial installation, they approach art as a process of dialogue and reciprocal learning with migrant communities. Across diverse cultural contexts, they experiment with materials drawn from everyday life and collaborate with various industries and craft practices to create immersive spatial environments.
