Kansas City Symphony Principal Trombone Evelyn Carlson joins us for Trombone Concerto by Grøndahl, a work that moves from introspective lyricism to virtuosic flair. Then Stravinsky's Petrushka closes the program with its Shrove-Tide carnival and its story of puppets who come to life, blurring the boundary between the stage and the real world.
The concert coincides with a masquerade ball, and audience members are encouraged to dress in costume — the thread of illusion and festivity extends well past the last note.
