ABOUT THE HONOREE:
As a lifelong supporter of education, literacy, family, and community involvement, it’s no surprise that Lana Burton dedicated her career to nurturing and supporting the community where she was born and raised. Lana has shaped the lives of countless youth and adults in the Evansville community and is still working behind the scenes to ensure our area’s most vulnerable have a voice.
A proud resident of the Oakdale Neighborhood in her youth, Lana remembers fondly how loving and supportive her neighbors were of each other. As a single mother during a time when this was uncommon, Lana’s mother worked hard to raise her children and ensured they all graduated from high school. During high school, Lana began tutoring students at Wheeler Elementary and realized that not all students could do the basics. Lana quickly realized she wanted to work with vulnerable youth and spent her entire career fulfilling this dream as a dedicated teacher, assistant principal, and principal in the Bosse district.
In the early 1990s, while Lana was teaching at Culver Elementary School, she worked closely with JoAnn Schwentker and Sylvia Weinzapfel to bring the YWCA Live Y’ers program to life. Years later during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Lana once again saw a community need and worked closely with Patricia Weinzapfel to create Read Evansville.
Lana possesses a remarkable ability to identify and address unmet needs in our community, and it is no wonder she has been recognized for her talents throughout the years. In 2011, Lana was named one of YWCA Evansville’s 100 Years, 100 Women honorees at the centennial celebration. She was also inducted into the EVSC Hall of Fame in 2020 and received the 2021 University of Evansville Edie Bates Volunteer Service Award, but her most treasured accolade may always be the immeasurable lives she touched through her remarkable career in education.
When asked what she is most proud of, Lana doesn’t hesitate to say she was blessed to be a servant leader in a position to help young people grow and develop. These days Lana enjoys spending time with her family who she dearly loves, but she also remains engaged and ready to lend a hand or offer ideas when her community is in need.
