Week 4 Clinic run by former University of Maryland Heavyweight, Youssif Hemida.
Youssif Hemida established himself as one of the top heavyweights in the country during his career at University of Maryland, becoming a two-time NCAA Division I All-American and one of the most decorated heavyweights in program history. After placing eighth at the 2018 NCAA Championships, Hemida elevated his performance even further in 2019, earning a sixth-place national finish and becoming just the eighth multi-time All-American in Maryland wrestling history.
During his senior season, Hemida compiled a 21-9 record while competing in one of the nation’s toughest heavyweight fields. Entering the 2019 Big Ten Championships unseeded, he produced one of the tournament’s most impressive runs, defeating multiple ranked opponents — including Ohio State’s fifth-seeded Chase Singletary and Wisconsin’s Trent Hillger — to place third overall. His finish was the highest by a Maryland wrestler since the program joined the Big Ten Conference.
At the 2019 NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh, Hemida battled through a loaded heavyweight bracket that included future Olympic champion Gable Steveson and several nationally ranked opponents. After dropping into the consolation bracket early, he responded with four straight victories in one day to secure All-American honors for the second consecutive season. His tournament run included wins over Iowa State’s Gannon Gremmel and Utah Valley’s Tate Orndorff by fall, along with a second straight NCAA Championships victory over Iowa heavyweight Sam Stoll. Hemida ultimately finished sixth in the nation after recording five wins during the tournament.
Beyond folkstyle success, Hemida also excelled internationally. Representing Team USA at the 2018 U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, he earned a silver medal in freestyle wrestling at 125 kg, posting a 3-1 record and outscoring opponents 15-3 in his victories before falling in the finals to former Junior World Champion Said Gamidov.
Hemida concluded his Maryland career with 86 victories, three NCAA tournament appearances, three Big Ten podium finishes, and recognition as a three-time team captain. He was ranked as high as fourth nationally at heavyweight and became widely respected for both his resilience and his ability to compete with the nation’s elite heavyweights on the biggest stages.
This will be Coach Hemida's first time at the MSWL and we are very excited to have him come share his experience, knowledge and skills with our wrestlers!
