Speaker: Nick Giannasca
Fresh off his speaking engagement at Reefapalooza Orlando, April 2026, Nick will be giving a talk to the club about:
Before It Hits the Tank: A Hobbyist’s Guide to Marine Biosecurity, Quarantine, and PCR Testing
Many marine diseases begin before obvious symptoms appear, so effective quarantine is about reducing risk through observation, separation, timing, and informed decision-making. This talk will cover practical biosecurity steps for hobbyists and explain where PCR testing fits as a tool for detecting hidden pathogens and improving quarantine decisions.
Bio:
Nick Giannasca is a molecular biologist and the founder, CEO, and Director of R&D at dxAquaria, a Maryland-based company developing rapid molecular diagnostics for aquatic disease. With nearly a decade of experience across microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, and in-vitro diagnostic assay development, Nick focuses on translating advanced nucleic-acid testing into practical tools for aquarium hobbyists, aquatic veterinarians, retailers, breeders, and aquaculture professionals.
At dxAquaria, Nick leads assay and platform development for detecting high-consequence aquatic pathogens before disease becomes obvious or difficult to manage. His work centers on improving biosecurity, quarantine, and treatment decisions by helping caretakers move from visual guesswork toward evidence-based disease detection. Through dxAquaria, Nick aims to make professional-grade aquatic diagnostics more accessible, actionable, and useful for the people responsible for aquatic animal health.
