Young Artists Summer Program: Introduction to Drawing
Kick off your summer with creativity, imagination, and hands-on art-making!
In this exciting introductory drawing workshop, youth will dive into the foundations of drawing while discovering their own unique artistic style in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment.
Through engaging, step-by-step guidance, participants will explore essential drawing techniques such as observation, line work, shape, proportion, shading, and composition. Using creative exercises and hands-on activities, young artists will build real confidence in their abilities while creating artwork they can feel proud of.
No previous drawing experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to create! This class is designed to support both beginners and developing young artists.
What Students Will Learn
- Core drawing fundamentals and sketching techniques
- How to really see through observation and visual thinking
- Shading, texture, depth, and basic composition
- Creative expression and developing personal style
- Confidence-building through guided artistic practice
About the Instructors
This program is led by fourth-year students from the Alberta University of the Arts studying Education, Fashion Design, Painting, Animation, and Sculpture. Together, they bring a multidisciplinary approach to teaching art in a way that is engaging, accessible, and inspiring for youth. The goal is to create a space where creativity, curiosity, and self-expression are encouraged and celebrated.
Materials
All basic drawing materials will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own sketchbooks or preferred drawing tools if they wish.

Youth ages 9+, Parents are more than welcome to stick around!
Registration
Space is limited in the library, so early registration is strongly encouraged. New weekly courses will run throughout the summer leading into September, each one offering new skills, techniques, and creative challenges.

Agenda: Introduction to Drawing (4-Hour Creative Studio)
1. Welcome & Creative Kickoff
Meet the instructors and jump straight into a fun, low-pressure warm-up drawing challenge to get ideas flowing and creativity unlocked.
2. Drawing Warm-Up Games
Fast-paced sketching activities to build confidence and loosen up your hand and eye coordination through fun, guided exercises.
3. Artist Skills Lab
Learn essential drawing fundamentals including observation, shape building, proportion, composition, and shading through demos and hands-on practice.
☕ Break (15–20 min)
Time to rest, chat, and recharge before the main creative session.
4. Main Drawing Challenge
A guided studio-style project where participants create their own artwork step-by-step with instructor support and creative prompts.
5. Creative Upgrade Session
Enhance your drawing with shading, texture, detail, and personal style. Optional challenges for more advanced participants.
6. Mini Gallery & Sharing Circle
Optional sharing of artwork in a supportive, positive environment focused on encouragement and creative growth.
7. Wrap-Up
Final reflections, key takeaways, and a preview of upcoming sessions.
