Yoga as Embodied Resistance
with Satya de la Paz & Anjali Rao
FREE EVENT
Yoga has both oppressive and liberatory threads in its long, complex 2,500 history. How can we, as contemporary yoga practitioners build capacity to co create spaces that disrupt past and ongoing harm? How can we co create spaces that can metabolize complexities? How does yoga intertwine with caste, colonialism and patriarchy? Why is a feminist lens on yoga history relevant during these times?
Join Anjali Rao, author of Yoga as Embodied Resistance, and Satya de la Paz, founder of SoulFlow Oakland, for gentle Hatha Yoga and a generative discussion that explores these core questions from Anjali’s thought-provoking book. This discussion sheds light on ways in which we can build authentic and embodied solidarities across differences.
We begin with community building and 40 minutes of gentle Hatha Yoga that can be done in any clothing. Multiple variations of postures will be offered sitting in a chair, lying down or standing. The practice will be followed by discussion, audience Q&A and a book signing. Copies of Yoga as Embodied Resistance will also be available for purchase during the event, courtesy of Womb House Books. We recommend purchasing and reading the book in advance: Yoga As Embodied Resistance. A percentage of book sales will benefit the SoulFlow scholarship program.
