On Hallow’s Eve, Yellow Eyes placed themselves back on the off-kilter Black Metal enthusiast’s menu again as they shadowdropped their 7th full-length album, Confusion Gate. Following their enigmatic Master’s Murmur, where they swapped most of the Metal Aspects with gloomy Ambient and Dungeon Synth collages and Dark Folk undertones with medieval instrumentation, the band returns to fuse these abstract motifs with the ferocity of Black Metal. To say that this combination works well is an understatement. The album may live up to its name for the inattentive listener as it is shifting course constantly and loves to pull the rug from under you. Chaotic and muddy soundscapes can be followed up by the most anthemic riffs you’ll hear all year, just to plunge into collapse again moments later. It’s truly baffling at first and it continues to be, yet it all checks out perfectly in the end.
The Skarstad brothers recounted in interviews that, through their many shows in recent years, they had truly learned what makes their unique sound work on stage. We are honored to be able to see the outcome of that process live in Innsbruck.
Ultha have been a figurehead of contemporary Black Metal for more than 10 years by now. More interested in pushing the genre forward rather than imitating what has already been done dozens of times before, the five-piece from Cologne has gradually evolved from its more ‘cascadian’ sounding beginnings to incorporate ideas and facets of other realms of outsider music, all while maintaining its unmistakable signature sound. The result is Atmospheric Black Metal that is almost cinematic at times, despite (or perhaps because of) the swathes of bleakness in between all of it.
Ultha share this interest in exploring the unbeaten paths of heavy music with their friends from across the Atlantic and we are delighted that they invited them to play alongside them on this very tour.
