Here ye, here ye! On Friday, August 7th, the Mahoning Drive-In Theater in Lehighton, PA presents YE SHALL BE JUDGE’D: A MIKE JUDGE ODE, featuring a 35mm double feature of two comedy classics from the man who brought the world Beavis and Butt-Head.
Join us for the iconic comedic criticism of cubicle culture, OFFICE SPACE (1999) and the comedy-turned-documentary IDIOCRACY (2006) on the big, BIG screen!
Mike Judge first broke into the popular consciousness with his crudely-animated and sharply-written MTV series BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD, following that phenomenon up with the animated KING OF THE HILL sitcom, before breaking into movies with BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD DO AMERCIA(1996), OFFICE SPACE, IDOCRACY, and EXTRACT (2009), and the hit HBO series SILICON VALLEY (2014-2019).
We celebrate the cinematic legacy of Mike Judge with his first two big-screen live action films, both underseen in theaters during their original run, but fan favorites in the ensuing decades.
We begin the evening with a film that while fiction, rings all too true for anyone who ever punched a clock as a desk jockey, suffering under middling management, fretting over TPS reports and inadequate flair, OFFICE SPACE! When three office mates, fed up with their jobs and endless office annoyances decide to embezzle from the corporation, things go awry and get very, very silly.
Originally a flop in theaters, OFFICE SPACE went on to become a cult hit on video, and one of the most quotable films of the 90s, the film that put Swingline back in the spotlight! With Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Gary Cole and Stephen Root.
We follow that with a film that once seemed completely ridiculous, but as is sadly often the case, reality has caught up with satire and surpassed it. When a soldier takes part in a hibernation experiment and is forgotten about, he awakens in a future America where the national IQ is comparable with a shoe size, finding that he’s the smartest person in the IDIOCRACY.
Luke Wilson stars as the soldier, navigating his way through a culture obsessed with moronic entertainment, and a government all to eager to cater to the lowest common denominator. It’s a ridiculous, silly, crude, hilarious, and shockingly less fantastical look at America than it was upon original release 20 years ago.
