Explore the five Yamas through movement & reflection - bringing yoga’s teachings into lived practice. Join a single class or full series.
About this Event
Yamas & Niyamas
The Yamas and Niyamas are the first two limbs of Patanjali’s eight-limbed path of yoga. The Yamas offer five practices of restraint in how we relate to the world, while the Niyamas offer five practices of self-cultivation. Often described as ethical principles, they can also be understood as practices for working with the tendencies of the mind and cultivating greater clarity, steadiness, and freedom.
This five-week series explores the Yamas as a lived practice through asana, prana, meditation, and reflection. Each 75-minute session will focus on one of the five Yamas:
- Ahimsa · non-harming
- Satya · truthfulness
- Asteya · non-stealing
- Brahmacharya · wise use of energy
- Aparigraha · non-possessiveness
Each session will include:
- An introduction to the week’s Yama and its place within the yoga tradition
- An asana and prana practice inspired by the teaching
- A short meditation
- Reflection or journaling, with space for questions, discussion, or sharing
No previous study of yoga philosophy is required— All levels welcome.
