Yale Club of Austin Meet and Greet with Texans for Greater Mental Health

This event is a happy hour giving Yale Club of Austin members the opportunity to meet and mingle with representatives of Texans for Greater Mental Health, a psychedelic medicine nonprofit. Dr. Lynnette Averill, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, will present on the science and promise of psychedelic medicine, and Texans for Greater Mental Health executive director Logan Davidson will give brief remarks on the status and future of psychedelic politics and policy.

Texans for Greater Mental Health

The core Texans for Greater Mental Health team led the passage of HB 1802 in 2021, Texas' landmark legislation establishing and funding a clinical trial for the use of psilocybin to treat Veteran PTSD at Baylor College of Medicine. T4GMH then worked with key stakeholders to secure an extension for that trial funding after delays with the DEA. The HB 1802 received full DEA approval in September 2024 and is fully underway.Besides HB 1802, T4GMH plays a key role in advising state advocacy outside of Texas through the Veteran Mental Health Leadership Coalition, supporting the passage of legislation in 4 states and at the federal level securing more than $90 million in government funding for psychedelic research. T4GMH partners with psychedelic and traditional organizations to lead community engagement, awareness, and education efforts for the public, policymakers, and key stakeholders across Texas and the United States.

Dr. Lynnette Averill, Ph.D.
Dr. Lynnette A. Averill is the daughter of a US Marine who died by suicide after years of struggling with ineffective treatments. His life – and subsequent death – shaped Dr. Averill personally and professionally. The focus of Dr. Averill’s work is on studying and supporting novel, rapid-acting interventions with potential to save lives. Her research focuses on the fine-grained understanding of mechanisms underlying psychedelic medicines, the effects of chronic stress and trauma, and treatment response. She served as subject matter expert for TX House Bill 1802 that passed with near unanimous bipartisan support and funds a clinical trial of psilocybin for Veterans with PTSD, which Dr. Averill will lead. Dr. Averill is an Assistant Professor Adjunct of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and holds positions at the Baylor College of Medicine and Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
