Brief History of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations, which is to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,Incorporated began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.--Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Five Founders that the sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was often quoted to say "[In the ideal collegiate situation] “there is a Zeta in every girl regardless of race, creed, or color who has high standards of principles, a good scholarly average, and an active interested in all things.”

Since its inception, the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); form adult and youth Affiliates; centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Brief History of the Youth Auxiliary

The first youth club, known as Zetalites, Archonettes, or Amicettes, was formed in the 1950s for all youth involved with the sorority. However, participation in club activities quickly increased to the point that the club was divided into two age groups. The high school girls kept the name of the Archonette Club, which accepts members who are in high school (ages 14-18). The younger girls became the Amicette Club (ages 9-13), and in the 1970s the Pearlette Club (ages 4-8) was organized. Numerous chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated sponsor these youth Affiliates. With continued program development and the establishment of guidelines, these clubs have become viable links of the Sorority.

Brief History of Chi Omicron Zeta Chapter (XOZ)

The Chi Omicron Zeta Chapter was chartered on June 20, 2009. The mission of the Chi Omicron Zeta Chapter is to uphold each of the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, while also utilizing ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) to reach out to populations that are being overlooked in the Virginia Beach community such as the youth, the elderly, women, minorities, and the homeless. We are "Serving the city of Virginia Beach, one neighborhood at a time."
