We’ll begin our day in the parking lot of Social Tap, right on the Wichita State University campus. When most people think of Wichita State, iconic landmarks like Corbin Hall or the legacy of Fairmount College often come to mind. But just beyond these familiar stories lies a lesser-known side of campus—one shaped by the complex history along 21st Street. This landscape holds echoes of a Native American boarding school, the grounds of a once-exclusive country club, key moments from the Civil Rights movement, and ties to Wichita’s rich aviation heritage. These stories speak to the deep layers of community, conflict, and change that have helped shape both WSU and the city of Wichita. By exploring this side of campus, we uncover histories that challenge the traditional narrative and invite us to view Wichita State—and the city itself—through a broader, more inclusive lens. After the tour, join us for lunch at Social Tap to continue the conversation and reflect on the morning’s journey through history.
