A writing workshop for columnists, diarists and Substackers wanting to record life and events in our great city of Wellington.
About this Event

We’ve all had that great night out on Courtenay Place or Cuba Street, a walk home when your umbrella gave out on Lambton Quay, the unbeatable good day strolling along the waterfront or braving the water in the harbour. But how do you turn our city into a story that people want to read?

Join Leah McFall and Dan Keane for a workshop exploring the joys of writing both the city and the self, and learn some simple techniques to capture your own role in the capital’s great drama.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to spot a story on the street
  • How to turn from anecdote to revelation
  • How to write the good days—and the bad

Suitable for Substackers, diarists, columnists or any writer looking to up their game - and for people looking to write a column like 'My Night Out' for The Local. In the workshop you'll not only learn and discuss techniques to communicate in more interesting ways, but also have a go, with some short writing exercises.

Workshop includes one free drink, and nibbles.

Leah McFall is a columnist at The Listener and The Local, and author of Karori Confidential, a collection of her prize-winning columns in The Sunday Star-Times. She reviews books for RNZ and writes the newsletter .

Dan Keane has written for Newsroom, The Spinoff, North & South, The Washington Post, and The Associated Press. He’s a PhD candidate at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington and writes the newsletter american.nz.

This workshop is brought to you by , Wellington’s community newspaper and an enthusiastic supporter of emerging writers and journalists, and will be hosted by editor Jane O'Loughlin.
