"Heroes Don't Change the World"
Our dominant cultural narrative tells us that change comes from heroes — extraordinary individuals who single-handedly bend history toward justice. David LaMotte challenges that story. Drawing on decades of experience as a musician, peace studies scholar, and community organizer, he makes the case that it's movements, not individuals, that drive lasting, large-scale change. It's not naive, he argues, to think you can change the world — it's naive to think you could be in the world and *not* change it. The real question is whether that change happens in isolation, or in community.
David LaMotte is a songwriter, speaker, and author who has performed over 3,500 concerts and released thirteen full-length CDs of primarily original music, as well as four books, touring all fifty states and five of the seven continents over his 35-year career. He holds a master's degree in International Studies, Peace, and Conflict Resolution from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, earned as a Rotary Peace Fellow. He is the former Clerk of the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee and a co-founder of Senderos, Inc., which has supported education in Guatemala since 2004. He lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina, with his wife and son, an old dog, and five chickens.
Come spend a morning wrestling with what it really means to change the world — together.
